Our animal rescue teams on the ground have returned to Louisiana
after being evacuated to Memphis, Tennessee to wait out Hurricane
Rita. Hurricane Rita was not as devastating as Katrina, but
Louisiana, and now Texas, were left reeling from Rita’s 120-mph
winds that tore apart Gulf Coast neighborhoods and left some areas
under up to 15 inches of water. |

Because some of the animals originally rescued
from New Orleans had to be moved to new shelters to avoid Rita’s path,
it has become even more challenging for those who lost their pets to
Katrina to once again reunite with their beloved animals. However, more
animals are being reunited than we expected and we are now focusing our
efforts on helping owners find their pets, even transporting pets to the
new locations of their owners whenever possible. We are also once again
financing the Code 3 Associates First Response Truck, which is en route
to Houston to find out where their 78-foot mobile rescue unit is most
urgently needed.

Preparing for Rita, IFAW was able to arrange
for the evacuation of a shelter at Lake Charles, Louisiana by providing
air conditioned trucks to move all 250 animals inland to safety. Many of
the animals at this shelter were dogs rescued from New Orleans via the
Lamar Dixon centre in Gonzalez. This is the second time within a month
that these animals have been in danger of their lives. Thanks to your
generosity, we are safeguarding the animals until they can be reunited
with their owners or found new homes.

This operation has required massive numbers of people and
massive amounts of equipment and supplies, from vehicles to
telecommunications to food and water.

To date, IFAW’s teams have rescued or
relocated more than 1,000 animals and assisted thousands of others,
with more than 320 animals tearfully reunited with their owners.
Our teams led the special operations and difficult high-risk
rescues in the area. We have also been steadily feeding and
providing water to animals in their homes and on the streets that
are in no immediate danger. You can watch and listen to many of

The path of Hurricane Rita was
tracked with gathering concern. The Lamar Dixon holding center at Gonzales,
which currently shelters more than 1,300 animals, was within the area
expected to be hit by winds and rain of at least 'tropical storm'
proportions. A decision was made at the Incident Command level that the
whole site would not be evacuated.
Hasty preparations were made to protect the
dogs as much as possible. As many dogs as could be moved out were taken
to safe shelters inland. Because Lamar Dixon is essentially a series of
horse barns with no sides, we created a massive barrier of trucks,
trailers and RVs around the metal horse stalls to protect the animals
from the potential onslaught of wind and rain. Thankfully our efforts
were successful, as the dogs sat out the storm safely.
New Orleans neighborhoods flooded again
The Lamar Dixon holding centre in Gonzales and the Louisiana State
University sites are still the priorities for our continual support, but
new priorities may develop in the wake of Hurricane Rita.
We had already contacted Texas authorities
before Rita hit to gain permission to enter any disaster areas, hoping
to avoid the wait that occurred in New Orleans directly after Katrina.
IFAW is committed to doing all we can to help these animals, not only
for their own sake, but on behalf of their owners who have lost
everything. If there is an urgent need for the specialist skills of the
IFAW Emergency Relief team in Texas the field team may head there. At
the moment we are waiting to get a full assessment and are thankful that
the damage in the aftermath of Rita was not as severe as Katrina.

stalle per cavalli senza pareti, noi abbiamo creato una massiccia barriera
di camion, roulotte e camper attorno alla recinzione di metallo per
proteggere gli animali dai venti e dalle piogge. Grazie ai nostri sforzi,
i cani non hanno avuto nessun problema.
Le zone vicino a New Orleans sono ancora
innondate.
Il centro Lamar Dixon di Gonzales e le zone vicino all'Università della
Lousiana sono ancora le nostre priorità per gli aiuti ma nuove emergenze
